About Right to Information and Information Privacy applications

This is the website for making Right to Information (RTI) and Information Privacy (IP) applications to Queensland Government departments.

Every day, departments respond to requests for general information from the public without using a legislative process (such as is involved in this application) to access information.

Departments are required to make information available wherever possible, and access to information should only be refused if on balance it is contrary to the public interest to provide that information. It is worth contacting the department concerned beforehand to find out if you can access the information you want through one of the following options:

Online — a search of Queensland Government websites (via www.qld.gov.au)

For purchase — the Queensland Government offers a range of documents for purchase (for example: birth certificate, transcripts of proceedings, spatial statistics)

By request — the Queensland Government administratively releases a range of information upon request (for example: maps, imagery and other data available via the resource centre at the Department of Natural Resources and Mines)

  1. Have you investigated the alternate options for accessing information above?
  2. Is the information you seek available for separate purchase (example: birth certificates) or by request?
  3. Is the information you seek held by a statutory authority, local government, government owned corporation or public authority (such as a University or Hospital and Health service)?

  4. It is recommended that you contact an RTI officer for assistance and advice before completing and submitting this application form. (Note: Right to Information and Information Privacy applications are part of a legislative process and an application fee may be payable.)

    Evidence of Identity

    To protect your privacy and that of others, if you are seeking personal information, you must provide evidence of your identity within 10 business days after making this application. The RTI officer will contact you to arrange for you to provide the required evidence of identity (for example: a certified copy of your driver's licence or passport).

    If you are seeking documents on someone's behalf, you must provide evidence of both identities as well as sufficient proof of your authorisation to act on the person's behalf (for example: a client agreement if you are a solicitor or written authorisation from the person concerned).

    Concession card holders

    Applications for financial hardship must be made in writing to the relevant agency. If you hold a valid concession card, and you are seeking a waiver of processing and access charges, you will be required to provide a copy of the card to the RTI officer. Note: not all concession cards are accepted. Please contact the RTI officer to be sure your card qualifies.

    Non-profit organisations

    If you have financial hardship status, you must provide the RTI officer with a copy of the notice from the Office of the Information Commissioner showing that financial hardship status has been granted. Note: if you are a non-profit organisation and have sought financial hardship status under the RTI Act, do not submit this application until you have advice from the Office of the Information Commissioner about whether financial hardship status has been granted. If financial hardship status is granted, this status will remain current for one year from the date of the Information Commissioner's decision.
